Malawi
Lake Malawi (The Lake of Stars)
This is the central feature of Malawi and a must-visit. It is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the world, with clear, calm waters.
Highlights: The lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique biodiversity, especially its hundreds of species of colorful cichlid fish. The water is often crystal clear and warm enough for swimming.
Best Locations: Cape Maclear (a relaxed, popular beach village), Likoma Island (a quiet, beautiful island with an impressive cathedral), and the resorts along the southern lakeshore.
Activities: Snorkeling, scuba diving (to see the cichlids), kayaking, sailing, and simply relaxing on the golden-sand beaches.
Southern Malawi Safari Circuit
The southern region is home to Malawi's most successful and rapidly developing wildlife reserves.
Majete Wildlife Reserve: Considered Malawi's flagship conservation success story. Through intense efforts, it has been restocked and now is a Big Five reserve (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and Buffalo). It offers traditional game drives and walking safaris.
Liwonde National Park: One of Malawi's most popular parks, dominated by the Shire River. It is famous for its large elephant and hippo populations, abundant crocodiles, and exceptional birdlife. Boat safaris on the Shire River are the highlight here.
The Southern Highlands and Plateaus
This region offers cool, mountainous landscapes perfect for hiking and scenic exploration.
Mount Mulanje: Known locally as the "Island in the Sky," this massive granite mountain is Central Africa's highest peak. It is a fantastic destination for multi-day hiking and climbing, with a network of trails and rustic huts. The surrounding area is famous for its tea plantations.
Zomba Plateau: The former colonial capital's plateau is a huge slab of mountain covered in forests, providing stunning views across the plains below, often featuring waterfalls, small lakes, and cool hiking trails.
Nyika National Park
Located in the Northern Region, Nyika is Malawi's largest national park and offers a very unique landscape.
Highlights: It is a high-altitude plateau of rolling grasslands, forested valleys, and hills that often feel more like the Scottish Highlands than Africa. It's excellent for horseback safaris, mountain biking, and walking safaris, with wildlife including zebras, roan antelope, and numerous orchids and wildflowers.
