The Bazaruto Archipelago
This is Mozambique's most famous and accessible collection of idyllic islands, located just off the coast of Vilanculos. It is a protected National Marine Park.
Highlights: Pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and towering, shifting sand dunes. The archipelago is a haven for marine life, including dolphins, marine turtles, and the rare Dugong (sea cow).
Best Islands: Bazaruto (the largest, known for its freshwater lakes and dunes) and Benguerra (famous for its luxury resorts, snorkeling, and diving.

The Quirimbas Archipelago
Located in the northern region near the city of Pemba, this is a more remote and exclusive chain of 32 islands, perfect for travelers seeking tranquility and historical depth.
Highlights: Untouched coral reefs, exceptional biodiversity, and the beautiful ruins of Portuguese colonial architecture.
Ibo Island: A must-see for its history, featuring old stone fortifications, decaying colonial buildings, and a unique atmosphere.
Best Time to Visit: The waters are excellent for diving and snorkeling year-round, with the dry months of May to September being the most pleasant.
Gorongosa National Park
Inland, Gorongosa is Mozambique's flagship conservation success story. Once devastated by civil war, it has been beautifully restored and is now a vibrant safari destination.
Highlights: Known as the "Serengeti of the South," the park's restoration efforts have brought back large populations of waterbuck, elephants, buffalo, and a strong presence of predators. It’s a place where science, conservation, and tourism powerfully intersect.
Activities: Classic game drives, guided walking safaris, and excellent bird watching in a truly diverse landscape of savanna and rainforest.
Tofo and Inhambane
This area on the southern coast is a favorite for budget travelers and, more notably, for marine enthusiasts.
Tofo Beach: A charming, laid-back fishing village that is a global hotspot for diving. It is one of the few places in the world where you have a high chance of spotting whale sharks and manta rays year-round.
Inhambane: The nearby city is one of Mozambique's oldest settlements, known for its beautiful colonial architecture and local markets.
Maputo (The Capital)
The capital city is the entry point for many and offers a mix of history, culture, and a lively atmosphere.
Highlights: Explore the historic Fortaleza de São Miguel, the uniquely designed Maputo Central Train Station (often cited as one of the world's most beautiful), and the bustling Central Market. It's a great place to experience Mozambican nightlife and enjoy the local culinary scene, especially the famous peri-peri seafood.
