The Northern Safari Circuit
This is the most famous and accessible circuit, home to a concentration of world-renowned parks.
Serengeti National Park: The ultimate safari destination, famous for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration, where over two million animals traverse the plains. It is known for its vast savannas and is excellent for spotting lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area: A UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. The crater floor is a high-density wildlife sanctuary, often called "Africa's Eden," offering the most reliable place to see the Big Five, including the endangered black rhino.
Tarangire National Park: Known for its huge herds of elephants and its striking landscape dotted with ancient, majestic baobab trees. It's a fantastic park for birdwatching and is at its best during the dry season.
Mount Kilimanjaro: Africa's highest peak is a major destination for trekkers who climb to its snowy summit. It provides a dramatic, iconic backdrop to the northern plains.
The Western Safari Circuit
This is the most remote and challenging area to visit, famous for its chimpanzees.
Mahale Mountains National Park: Located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, this park is home to one of the largest populations of wild chimpanzees in the world, which visitors can track and observe on foot.
Gombe Stream National Park: Made famous by the research of Jane Goodall, this is another smaller, more accessible park for chimpanzee trekking.
The Coast and Islands (The Zanzibar Archipelago)
This is the perfect destination to combine with a mainland safari, offering a blend of beach relaxation and history.
Zanzibar (Unguja Island): Famous for its pristine white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and turquoise waters. Stone Town, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its winding alleys, historic carved doors, and spice trade history.
Pemba and Mafia Islands: These smaller islands offer a more secluded and exclusive escape. They are world-renowned for diving and snorkeling, particularly Mafia Island, which has a marine park famous for whale sharks (seasonal).
The Southern Safari Circuit
This region offers a more remote, crowd-free, and diverse safari experience, ideal for second-time visitors or those seeking solitude.
Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve): Africa's largest standalone national park offers unique safari activities like boat safaris along the Rufiji River (where you can see hippos and crocodiles) and walking safaris. It's a stronghold for wild dogs.
Ruaha National Park: Tanzania's largest national park is an untouched wilderness known for its dramatic landscapes, huge elephant population, and high concentration of lions. Because it is remote, you will encounter far fewer tourist vehicles.
